A Simple Winter Wine Loop: Sierra Vista Holly’s Hill Boa Vista Docmanov
A relaxing half-day trip just 45 minutes from Roseville
This past Sunday we took a planned winery trip up into El Dorado County to slow down before the holidays. I’ve visited Sierra Vista and Holly’s Hill many times over the years, but adding Docmanov at the end turned it into one of the easiest and most enjoyable half-day outings we’ve done.
And I think what made it especially enjoyable was this:
We’ve been under fog for nearly five straight days here locally.
Gray mornings, gray afternoons, gray evenings.
But just 40-50 minutes east, we rose above the cloud layer and into clear sky.
Sunlight, views, fresh foothill air, and open space.
It’s amazing how different everything feels when you get even a short distance up into the hills.
🍇 Stop #1: Sierra Vista Vineyard & Winery
We started at Sierra Vista—one of the most consistently relaxed wineries around. A close friend is a member there, so we often begin wine trips at this stop.
What stood out most this time:
✔ Wide, open foothill views
✔ A cozy holiday-themed tasting room
✔ Space to sit and linger
✔ Warmer air and sunlight above the fog layer
It was peaceful, simple, and exactly how you want a day to start.
If someone hasn’t visited Sierra Vista before, it’s an easy recommendation.
🍷 Stop #2: Holly’s Hill Winery
From Sierra Vista we headed to Holly’s Hill, which sits up on a hilltop with views stretching across the ridgelines. I’ve always liked this stop, but this particular visit had something unique:
They were doing a wine-and-chocolate pairing, followed by fresh tamales.
Both were excellent.
The tasting structure flowed well, and the pairing was thoughtful. The tamales were a perfect finish before moving on. Add sunny weather and open seating, and it made this stop feel personal and seasonal.
This is also where being above the fog really sank in.
Clear light, open views, and a different atmosphere than we’ve had here in Roseville lately.
🍩 Mid-Stop Break — Boa Vista Orchard
(Apple Hill)
Between Holly’s Hill and Docmanov we made a stop at Boa Vista in Apple Hill. It wasn’t originally part of the route, but when you see fresh donuts coming out of the bakery, it becomes part of the route quickly.
We picked up:
🍎 Fresh apples
🍩 Warm cinnamon-sugar donuts
Sometimes it’s the small stops that make a day memorable.
10-15 minutes there was perfect.
🍷 Stop #3: Docmanov Vineyard
We finished at Docmanov—a smaller winery setting with more of an intimate feel. If the first two stops are about scenery and pace, Docmanov is about simplicity:
✔ Smaller tasting area
✔ Quiet property feel
✔ Unhurried pacing
It was the right place to end.
We stayed a little longer than planned simply because the environment slowed everything down. The views, the sunlight, and the quiet atmosphere made it a great finishing stop.
🗺 Our Route (Very Easy to Follow)
Here’s the loop in order:
Sierra Vista
↓ ~2 minutes
Holly’s Hill
↓ ~20 minutes
Boa Vista Orchard
↓ ~6 minutes
Docmanov
Total outing:
⏱ About 3.5–4 hours
⏱ 45–50 minutes drive from Roseville
⏱ Never rushed
It’s a half-day trip that still leaves you home with daylight left.
❄️ Why This Trip Works Especially Well Right Now
During winter, foothill wineries have benefits you don’t get in spring or summer:
✔ No heat
✔ No summer crowds
✔ Easier parking
✔ Open seating
✔ Quieter tasting rooms
✔ Seasonal food offerings
✔ Apple Hill bakeries operating
And this week specifically:
➡️ You get to step into sunshine after days of fog.
That alone changes the feel of the day.
❤️ My Final Thoughts
Even though I’ve been to Sierra Vista and Holly’s Hill plenty of times, stringing them together and finishing at Docmanov made the trip feel new. Add chocolate pairing, tamales, and a donut break—and it turned into a simple reset heading into a busy month.
It wasn’t a full-day trip.
It wasn’t rushed.
It wasn’t complicated.
Just sunlight, local wine, fresh air, and good company.
Sometimes that’s all you really need.
